Performance

About ClafT
ClafT creates opportunities for the creation and experience of culture and art that penetrate deeply into the lives of citizens through the annual autumn Centre line art festival Tokyo and the year-round ClafT art events, workshops and learning events, and promotes the establishment of a new platform for cultural transmission.
The aim is to systematise the wide-area culture of the Tama region in western Tokyo and to create a 'Suburban Cultural Area' that is comparable to the central cultural area of Tokyo, thereby creating multiple layers of culture in Tokyo both domestically and internationally.
The festival program includes a wide variety of programs by artists from japan and abroad in the fields of art, theatre, film and music, providing a place where citizens can experience the diversity of art and creating an environment where citizens themselves can voluntarily participate in the creation and transmission of art. The main festival aims to create an itinerant art festival spanning the administrative boundaries from Nakano to Tachikawa. In doing so, it seeks to connect people to people, people to town, town to town, thereby fostering a form of micro-tourism and art tourism along the Chuo Line known as “a small journey through art.”
What's Claft
ClafT is the abbreviation for Center line art festival Tokyo.
The origin of the name comes from the "Arts and Crafts Movement" that spread from the United Kingdom to other countries at the end of the 19th century.
Since the Third Industrial Revolution, which was driven by innovations in IT, the current Fourth Industrial Revolution, marked by the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), has been expanding rapidly on a global scale.
In this era, ClafT aims to reconsider the nature and role of art, sharing a culture created in collaboration with citizens and spreading it from Tokyo to the wider world.
About the "Arts and Crafts Movement"
A movement of the plastic arts that emerged in England in the late 19th century and influenced North America, European countries, East Asia, and the Japanese folk art movement from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Fundamentally, it is a movement that aims to revive handicrafts, as well as a social movement that seeks overall harmony between people and things.
The movement in England was a response to social problems that arose after the Industrial Revolution and was characterized by a strong interest in social reform. The core of the movement's thought lies in J. Ruskin, who found the ideal of art in medieval artisan production and labor, and W. Morris, who put his theories into practice.
In the 1880s, a younger generation influenced by their teachings founded medieval craft guilds, which played a major role in the international expansion of the Arts and Crafts movement.
